Five more UB students face drug charges

Sunday, October 7th, 2012

For the second time in recent weeks, several college students living in a University District neighborhood were arrested on drug-related charges.

The latest arrests on West Northrup Place, announced Saturday, involved five 19-year-old University at Buffalo students, according to Michael J. DeGeorge, a police department spokesman. Two weekends ago, four UB business majors were among seven people accused of operating a major drug ring at 51 W. Northrup.

Tuesday’s arrests were made when police executed a search warrant at 86 W. Northrup, and came after the students accepted a controlled delivery of illegal drugs. Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Postal Service inspectors assisted Buffalo police in their investigation.

Arrested on multiple drug-related charges were: Cameron Hom, John Marchant, Jared Eder, Ethan Mirenberg and Michael Daley. Their hometowns weren’t disclosed.

Police said they seized cocaine, marijuana, pills and other illegal drugs. Three guns and almost $800 in cash also was confiscated.

Black Mob Hijacks Store: ‘We Own This’

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

Even the old-timers in Detroit never have seen anything like this: A mob of 40 black people moved into a convenience store and will not leave.

They say they now own it. They eat. Smoke. Cuss.Threaten. Spit. Rob. Sell drugs. All on video.

Police, ministers, neighbors, the store owner and just about everyone else seems powerless to stop them.

“It’s a Bad Crew gas station,” said one of the mob to the local Fox affiliate. “If you don’t know what that is, I can’t even tell you.”

The owner calls police, but nothing happens. The police “come here and then they leave. Two minutes later they (the mob) are back.”

In June, another Detroit convenience store had the same problem: A black mob took over the store, told the owners they now own it, and started robbing and threatening. All on video.

The mob beat a clerk who tried to stop them.

After the robbery and beating on the video, the mob left. Several hours later, they returned, this time with a gun. Shots were fired. No one was hurt.

Nine hours later, police responded. In many cities, police no longer respond to complaints of shoplifting or “loitering” at neighborhood stores.

The mob won’t go away and the police won’t arrest them. But they did have some advice for what this business owner should do: “Hire a security guard.”

Violence and lawlessness have long been a hallmark of life in Detroit. So much so, it is now newsworthy when violence and lawlessness do not happen.

Idaho inmate charged with 1983 rape, murder in Ogden

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

Ogden • Weber County’s top prosecutor expects a man charged late last week with the 1983 rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl to be extradited from Idaho within the next two months.

Speaking to reporters at a Monday morning news conference, Weber County Attorney Dee Smith outlined the case against Gregory L. Seamons, and lauded Ogden detectives for solving a 29-year-old mystery, bringing closure to Rebecca Lemberger’s mother.”There isn’t anything that can happen now that can undo what happened to her daughter back in 1983,” Smith said. “But she’s got some answers now.”

An arrest warrant filed in 2nd District Court alleges Seamons, 44, was the person who killed 11-year-old Rebecca, who went missing after walking to Edison Elementary School on March 2, 1983.

After she was reported missing, a pair of 11-year-old classmates grabbed BB guns from their homes and told their parents they were “going to look for Becky,” according to news accounts at the time. They found her in a wooden shed near the school. She was underneath an old mattress, wrapped in a blanket. Police said her head had been smashed at least eight times with a rock.

Evidence collected at the scene indicated Rebecca also had been raped. Nearly 30 years later, officials said a DNA match led them to Seamons, who is serving prison time in Idaho. According to the warrant, a DNA sample taken by Seamons in July 2011 matched the DNA from the 1983 murder scene, which was placed into a national database. Police also determined that Seamons, who was 15 at the time, was living in the same Ogden neighborhood as the Lembergers at the time she was killed. Police verified the DNA match in October 2011.

Smith credited the Ogden Police Department for its work.

“They feel like they owe it to victims of violent crimes not to let their cases go,” he said. “For the families that have suffered this loss, that never goes away. But if you can provide some answers and closure…it’s very rewarding.”

Seamons was interviewed from prison twice and told police he did not know the victim and was not with her during the time frame when she was murdered.

Seamons has been charged with first-degree murder and rape, both first-degree felonies.

The Idaho Department of Correction website states that Seamons is currently in prison for a second-degree kidnapping conviction. His prison sentence is scheduled to end in 2017.

Police: Robbery leads to gun fight at car wash in city

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

Akeem Harris, 22, of Rochester was shot after he allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint on Genesee Street Monday.

A Rochester man has been accused of robbing a city man at gunpoint on Genesee Street and crashing a van down the road Monday afternoon.

Akeem Harris, 22, of Lee Place was charged with first-degree robbery and fourth-degree grand larceny, both felonies, according to City Court records.

Harris is accused of stealing $400 from a 36-year-old Rochester man at a car wash on Genesee Street about 1:15 p.m. Harris allegedly fired a round after he got into a van to drive away.

The victim told Rochester police that he fired back, striking the van several times. One of the bullets also struck Harris in his lower torso, said Rochester Police Sgt. Justin Collins.

Harris drove northbound on Genesee Street as he was driving away from the scene. The van went up on a curb and hit a tree. No serious injuries were reported.

Harris ran from the scene and went to Strong Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle. He was treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The victim, who used a legally-registered handgun, also left the scene but returned several minutes later, Collins said.

Harris Tuesday morning pleaded not guilty in City Court and was remanded to the Monroe County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing Friday morning.

Officers continue to investigate the incident. Charges are not expected to be filed against the victim, Collins said.

Murder charges for man held in home invasion

Sunday, August 5th, 2012

Jermalle Brown

Charges have been upgraded to murder for a 19-year-old accused of home invasion in a July 25 incident on the South Side that left one of his fellow attackers dead, police said.

Jermalle Brown, 19, of the 7100 block of South East End Avenue was charged with murder in the accidental shooting death of Douglas Bufford, 16, police said.

Brown was already in custody because he’d been charged only with committing a home invasion, police said. He had appeared in bond court July 28 and was being held in lieu of $250,000, according to jail records.

Brown did not appear Saturday in court.

Police said that about 9:45 p.m. July 25, four or five males forced their way into a home on the 1400 block of East 73rd Street in the Grand Crossing neighborhood and announced a robbery.

One of a group accidentally shot a fellow attacker, identified as Bufford, in the back of the head with a shotgun, police said. The homeowner wasn’t injured, according to authorities.

In addition to Brown, a 16-year-old was also charged but his name was not available. It was not clear who the shooter was.

An autopsy July 30 determined Bufford died of a shotgun wound to the head, according to the Cook County medical examiner‘s office. Bufford was pronounced dead July 29 at 1:55 p.m. atJohn H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, the medical examiner’s office said.

Murder D rape suspects arrested in North West

Monday, July 30th, 2012

Two people have been arrested for murder and two for rape in North West, police said on Sunday.

Capt Adele Myburgh said a 24-year-old man was arrested in Jouberton for stabbing a man to death in an argument on Saturday.

“The suspect took a knife and [fatally] stabbed the victim in his neck.”

Police arrested the man at the scene.

Myburgh said a teenage boy from Madikwe was arrested on Saturday, by police acting on a tip- off, for stabbing to death a 20-year-old man.

In Mmabatho, a man was arrested for a rape on Friday.

“A group of friends were spending some time together and the victim felt tired and decided to go and sleep. The suspect allegedly came into her room and raped her,” said Myburgh.

Another man was arrested on Friday for breaking into a house, raping a mentally ill 19-year-old woman and stealing food, she said.

Police said the woman’s family was at a night vigil, but regularly phoned her. They became worried when she did not answer her cellphone and returned to find that she had been raped and the house had been burgled. -Sapa

Blacks Ruin Fourth of July for White Families in Albany, GA

Saturday, July 7th, 2012

The plan is simple: log in to Twitter and search for interesting combinations of words, like “fireworks, black” and “someone got shot at the fireworks.” I know, I know: super racis’. Indulge me.

Yesterday we checked out Chicago. Today we’ll be exploring Albany, Georgia (72% black, 25% white, 2% Hispanic).

Independence Day Violence in Albany, According to the Mainstream

From WALB.com: “Fights disrupt Albany fireworks” (July 4, 2012).

Albany Police suspended the July 4th fireworks show Wednesday night because they say a series of fights put families, who were there to enjoy a night of fun, in danger.

Chief John Proctor said a number of fights broke out in the Turtle Park area where many people gathered to watch the fireworks show. He said it became a safety and crowd control issue, and police officers made the decision to suspend the fireworks.

About 10:45 p.m., the Chief told WALB News Ten the area had been cleared. A few minutes later, Capt. Reginald Brown told us the fireworks show did resume, although few people were there to see the end of it.

The Chief said APD had 85 officers assigned to the event. He said there was no gunfire and there’s no indication that gangs were involved. Proctor blamed the problems on juveniles who were downtown without any adult supervision.

Before all that trouble, vendors and families gathered for what they expected to be a fun and safe celebration of our nation’s independence.

Oh, those juveniles lacking adult supervision — those daring packs of kids — those rascally gaggles of urchins! Always causing all that trouble.

Patricia Porter went downtown with her family. She said, “I’m glad that they’re doing something for us, having something for us to come out here and enjoy because it’s not often as a city group that we get to enjoy anything.”

Rodney Walker is a vendor who was selling chicken wings. He said, “Oh, having an event like this for the city is great because it brings good people and good food all together in the same place at the same time.”

Unfortunately, the good event they expected was marred by violence started by troublemakers.

Chief Proctor said no one was seriously injured in any of the fights. Capt. Brown told us officers did make some arrests, but he was not sure how many.

Let’s take a look at some of those families who came to enjoy a night of fun and had it ruined by some troublemaking juveniles.

What a nice family.

Another nice family!

The world needs more of these.

A day of fun.

Don’t forget the chicken stand!

Footage of the troublemakers is curiously absent, though. I wonder why…

Independence Day Violence in Albany, According to Black People

Let’s search Twitter for “turtle park, black” and other racis’ combinations of words and see what we come up with. As usual, I’ll sort it by date and provide the name of the Twitter user, his or her race, the time, the number of re-Tweets, if any, and the Tweet itself.

July 3

  1. Crown_RealistYo, black, 1:32 pm, re-Tweeted 3 times: iTs Goinq Be HOT AF [as fuck] Tommrow At Turtle Park *shrugs* I Ain’t Tryna [trying to] Turn Black .

July 5

    1. TrillaryCLINT0N, black, 12:25 am, re-Tweeted 8 times: Turtle park was “thick” lol but black folks just get outta line sometimes or maybe that’s just Albany *sigh*

    4. iGoBy_Phillip, black, 12:17 pm, re-Tweeted once: Albany herald took this pic of us at turtle park yesterday , lol http://t.co/pLUtklzr

“Albany herald took this pic of us at turtle park yesterday , lol”

    1. KissMy_Beautyyy, black, 2:24 pm: At turtle Park http://t.co/cxZWHn4d

“At turtle Park”

  1. jerneriamilledg, black, 6:18 pm: NOW YOU’LL [y'all] BLACK FOLKS GOT THESE WHITE PEOPLE SCRARED [scared] TO COME BACK TO TO TURTLE PARK,LMFAO

July 6

  1. williambutler6, black, 1:44 am: Well black ppl [people] we made the news again fighting n shit @ turtle park …#smh [shaking my head]

Recall that “shaking my head” (“SMH”) is how black people traditionally express their displeasure at other black people on Twitter.

So What Did We Learn This Time?

Once again, it is obvious that black people were responsible for the entire “series of fights” that “put families, who were there to enjoy a night of fun, in danger,” necessitating the fireworks show’s suspension by the police who, with only 85 officers, were unable to handle the “safety and crowd control issue.” Once again, it is equally obvious that the mainstream media will not report this little detail, and you’re super racis’ for noticing it.

Furthermore, since — as we all know — black people can’t ever be “racist” (whatever that means), we are once again able to update our Officially Not Racist list. None of this can possibly be “racist,” because a black person said it.

  1. Black people don’t never get along.
  2. Black people don’t know how to act.
  3. Black folks just get out of line sometimes.
  4. Avoid Turtle Park in the future: black people are always fighting.
  5. Black folks have now, finally, got white people scared to come to Turtle Park.

An alleged case of rape and revenge in Clovis

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Prosecutors laid out their case against a Clovis man accused of murder in a twisted trail of rape and revenge.

Casildo Varbarin’s life turned upside-down at a Clovis apartment complex in early February.

The 22-year-old’s girlfriend told him a group of men had sexually assaulted her and Varbarin knew the men.

Within a couple days, Clovis police arrested Varbarin on charges that he killed Ahjahn Thirakoune — a friend he blamed for the rape.

Curt Fleming with the Clovis Police Department said, “While questioning [Thirakoune] about that, he found out [Thirakoune] had also had sex with this girl and he didn’t feel [Thirakoune] was taking it very serious and he became upset.”

Varbarin’s attorney says Thirakoune was like an uncle to her client, but his actions before his death were criminal.

Varbarin’s defense attorney Margarita Martinez-Baly said, “He made comments to the effect that [Varbarin] should not marry her because she was now somehow soiled?”

Fleming: “That’s correct.”

Martinez-Baly: “And that’s when he admitted that the four of them had raped her?”

Fleming: “That’s correct.”

A judge wouldn’t allow us to show Varbarin’s face in court, but in his mug shot, you can see injuries to his neck.

Investigators interviewed him in the emergency room at Community Regional Medical Center and say he confessed to killing Thirakoune by stabbing him in the heart, then tried to slit his own throat.

His defense attorney says, if Varbarin really killed Thirakoune, it was in the heat of passion. But prosecutors say Varbarin had already planned to kill someone, and a conversation with his roommate on the day of the murder proves it.

Drake Hodge with the Clovis Police Department said, “He said he wanted a gun, that he needed a gun, he needed one right away for some protection.”

A judge decided Thursday there is enough evidence for Varbarin to stand trial for murder. He’s due back in court next month.

Prosecutors have charged one man for the sexual assault. Two more suspects have not been arrested.

Maine’s crime rate jumps 5.4 percent

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

Maine‘s crime rate rose more than 5 percent in 2011, taking the second jump in as many years and the largest increase since 1975, in contrast to national trends.

Burglaries, assaults and thefts all increased from 2010 to last year in rural and urban areas of Maine.

Nationally, crime dropped, according to statistics released last week by the FBI. Violent crime dropped 4 percent in 2011 and property crimes dropped 0.08 percent.

Maine remains one of the safest states, but Public Safety Commissioner John Morris said the numbers are troubling. He identified drug addiction as the prime factor.

“Drugs are the main reason for the increase as addicts commit crimes to feed their habits,” Morris said. “Prescription drug abuse is responsible for much of the state’s drug problem.”

Demand for money to buy drugs fuels many of the state’s burglaries, thefts and robberies; and substance abuse, including abuse of alcohol, contributes to many of the assaults.

Every crime category increased in 2011 except robberies, which showed a slight decline.

Crime in Portland, the state’s largest city, dropped overall, continuing a positive trend.

Police chiefs in Greater Portland said drug-related crime can drive dramatic swings in crime rates.

“Anybody in law enforcement will tell you substance abuse issues drive crime statistics, both alcohol and drugs,” said Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck.

He said crime in Portland is around the same level so far this year.

“While cocaine is still the major drug problem in southern Maine, prescription drugs just really blew through the entire state and are causing major, major problems for entire counties of folks,” he said.

According to the state statistics, crime rose fastest in towns that have their own police departments, compared with rural areas that are patrolled by sheriff’s deputies and state troopers.

Falmouth Police Chief Ed Tolan, who leads a group of chiefs in southern Maine for the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, said it can be hard to determine exactly why crimes in one geographical area or type of community rise or fall in a given year.

He speculated that while urban centers can have a high percentage of criminals, many burglars, for instance, may have more success breaking into homes in the suburbs.

“If I’m going to commit a burglary to look for jewelry and such … South Portland, Cumberland, Falmouth, the nicer areas of Portland, that’s where you’re going to get your best bang for the buck,” Tolan said.

The Maine statistics show that arson increased 6 percent last year, burglaries increased 10 percent and motor vehicle thefts increased 5 percent.

There were 28 homicides during the year, up from 24 in 2010.

Aggravated assaults increased 16 percent, and sexual assaults increased 6 percent. Domestic-violence assaults increased nearly 5 percent in 2011, reversing three consecutive years of declines.

Crime increased 3.5 percent overall in rural areas, which are patrolled by state police and sheriff’s departments. It went up 6 percent in cities and towns with their own police departments.

The 36,248 crimes reported in 2011 represent a crime rate of 27.9 offenses per 1,000 people, Morris said. The national crime rate in 2010 was 33.5 offenses per 1,000 residents. The national rate for 2011 has not been released yet.
