30,000 illegal Indian immigrants to benefit from US policy

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

At least 30,000 Indians would be among the 1.76 million undocumented illegal immigrants who would benefit from US President Barack Obama’s new policy to defer deportation of illegal immigrants for two years, a new study said.

Using Current Population Survey data from the US Census Bureau, Migration Policy Institute (MPI) estimates that as many as 1.76 million people, under the age of 31, could be at risk of being deported in the future or who are currently in removal proceedings could gain deferred action as a result of the Obama administration policy announced on June 15.

Of these 1.76 million illegal immigrants an estimated 30,000 each are from India, and Korea — the two top countries of origin outside Latin America, MPI said adding that two in

three unauthorised immigrants potentially eligible for deferred action came from Mexico (1.17 million, or 65 per cent).

The next two countries of origin were El Salvador (slightly less than 60,000, or 3 per cent) and Guatemala (50,000, or 3 per cent).

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative, which will decide applications on a case-by-case basis, will offer a two-year grant of reprieve from deportation as well as work authorisation to unauthorised immigrants who were under the age of 31 as of June 15, with certain conditions attached.

MPI estimates that 1.26 million of the 1.76 million potential beneficiaries are 15 or older and thus immediately meet the age requirement to apply for deferred action.

Tire failure blamed for deadly crash that killed 15 suspected illegal immigrants

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

A pickup truck’s front tire that apparently had come apart was likely the cause of a weekend crash on a rural South Texas highway that claimed its 15th victim Tuesday, authorities said.

The truck packed with 23 suspected illegal immigrants crashed Sunday evening near Goliad, about 90 miles southeast of San Antonio. Eight passengers remain hospitalized. Investigators were working to identify the victims, who they said are from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala.

“More than likely the crash was caused by front right tire separation,” Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Gerald Bryant said Tuesday.

The investigation into the crash continues, and Bryant would not say if the tire was old and worn or if the separation was a manufacturing issue. He did not name the tire brand.

Eleven people died at the scene, including two girls. Four more died later at hospitals, including a man who died Tuesday.

Bryant identified the driver as 22-year-old Ricardo Mendoza-Pineda, who died in the crash. Mendoza-Pineda was from Mexico, Bryant said, but he could not comment on his immigration status. Bryant said interviews with survivors indicated the truck was bound for Houston.

The Mexican Consulate in San Antonio had confirmed Monday that one 22-year-old man from Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, was among the dead.  In a statement, the Guatemalan government said at least two Guatemalans died in the accident, a 27-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman.

Crashes of vehicles overloaded with illegal immigrants moving north occur periodically, often as they attempt to evade authorities.

In April, nine Mexican immigrants died near the border when the teenage driver of their van crashed after fleeing Border Patrol. There were 18 people in that minivan.

In that case, six adults face a variety of federal charges and the 15-year-old driver was charged in state court with nine counts of murder.

20 suspected illegal immigrants detained

Friday, July 20th, 2012

Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday took into custody 20 suspected undocumented immigrants, including three minors, as a result of an investigation into human smuggling, officials said.

Deputies first learned of the smuggling when they investigated a vehicle they later determined had taken 14 people into the country illegally, officials said in a press release.

Detectives conducted interviews with the immigrants and discovered they had paid anywhere from $300 to $4,500 to be smuggled into the country, the Sheriff’s office said. Information from that investigation led detectives to a house in Mesa where six more undocumented immigrants were taken into custody, officials said.

Three minors, ages 7, 13 and 15, were among them. Detectives said the two younger boys, who are unrelated, were taken into the country to be reunited with their mothers.

The majority are from Mexico and one is from Guatemala, officials said.

Sixteen people were booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on counts of human smuggling. The three minors and the mother of the 15-year-old were turned over to federal immigration officials.

3 illegal aliens nabbed in NY Mills

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

Three illegal aliens from Guatemala were busted Wednesday morning living in a New York Mills apartment and working illegally for a restaurant in New Hartford, authorities said.

Shortly after 7 a.m., New York Mills police joined federal U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and the U.S. Border Patrol in apprehending the aliens living at 25 New Hartford St., police Sgt. Lee Soja said.

The trio – two men aged 21 and 31, and a 24-year-old woman – were transported to a substation of the U.S. Border Patrol in Syracuse, and will soon head to Buffalo for further deportation hearings, Soja said.

This isn’t the first time illegal aliens have been nabbed in this small village over the years, Soja said: A Russian woman was previously taken into custody, as well as a person from Mexico.

“I would say it is a concern to us,” Soja said. “Everybody likes to come to America and work because it’s the land of opportunity. I’m not saying they are bad individuals, but you have people here who are paying taxes and working hard, and then you might have others coming here to flee their country and we may never know who they are.”

New York Mills police and federal immigration authorities were first alerted to the targeted village address last week after New Hartford police charged another man with possessing illegal bath salt drugs, New Hartford police Sgt. Michael Kowalski said.

That man – identified as Henry Robello Mazugrie, 23 – said he had once lived at that location, and he was later found to be an illegal alien, police said.

As police recently attempted to interview the residents despite a language barrier, Soja said one of the aliens offered a fraudulent form of identification while the others had no immigration paperwork or visas.

“By interviewing them, they did admit they weren’t supposed to be here,” Soja said. Police believe the aliens had been living here for about three months, but it remains unclear how they initially entered the country.

Further investigation also revealed that the three illegal aliens apprehended Wednesday had been working at an Asian restaurant in New Hartford, while the fourth had also worked at the establishment at one point but was believed to be currently unemployed, Soja said.

Neighboring residences at 25 ½ and 27 New Hartford St. were also investigated, but no other illegal aliens were discovered, Soja said. Two legal immigrants were located, one of which was also working at the same restaurant.

The owner of the restaurant was also the landlord of the apartments where the illegal aliens were living, but that person told police that he believed the workers had legally entered the country, Soja said.

As far as whether the business owner made any efforts to determine if he was hiring legal workers, local police officials said that aspect is something that would be more appropriately investigated by federal immigration authorities.

“At this point in time, our main focus was the individuals,” Soja said. “Although there may be some follow-up, it seemed to be the impression that he thought they were here legally.”
