Mexican Inmates Start Riot over Prison Treatment

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

Undocumented immigrants started a riot over poor food, medical care and what they say are disrespectful guards at a Mississippi prison.

One guard was killed and 20 people were injured in the May 20 riot at the privately-run Adams County Correctional Facility in Natchez, which holds undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes in the United States.

The leaders of the Mexican inmates, known as the Paisas, demanded to take a list of grievances to the warden that day and told others in the group to disobey orders from prison staff, according to the FBI affidavit.

Correction officer Catlin Carithers was beaten to death during the riot, which officials have said involved as many as 300 inmates and left the prison badly damaged.

FBI spokeswoman Deborah Madden said Paisas are a loosely affiliated group within the prison, without ties to organized gangs.

“The Paisas were further instructed by their new leaders to destroy the prison if staff made any attempts to break up the riot,” the affidavit said. It says damages to the prison are estimated at more than $1.3 million. “In addition to destroying the prison, Paisas planned to assault the correction officers.”

At one point, the inmates gained access to a section of the prison by telling the warden they wanted to go back to their cells, but they ended up taking more hostages once they got into that part of the facility, the affidavit said

The affidavit describes a chaotic scene in which inmates were picking up tear gas canisters and hurling them back at guards. Some guards locked themselves in safe rooms, but the inmates used keys taken from other officers to get into the rooms. They also looted the kitchen and commissary.

The affidavit is part of a criminal complaint that alleges that Juan Lopez-Fuentes was in charge of a group of inmates who took hostages in one section of the prison. Lopez-Fuentes allegedly forced one of the hostages, a prison guard, to relay orders for tactical teams to drop their weapons and back off.

The prison holds nearly 2,500 low-security inmates, with most serving time for coming back to the United States after being deported.

Attempted kidnapper in Hopewell case sentenced to five years

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

A Southampton, Pa. man was sentenced to five years in prison today for attempting to hire a team of white supremacists to kidnap a woman who works in Hopewell Township and her young child in 2010.

Jayen I. Patel, 41, pleaded guilty earlier this year to soliciting for assistance with a kidnapping. Patel was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Freda L. Wolfson to five years in prison followed by a three-year supervised release.

Patel was arrested last fall at an office he had rented in a Princeton Township. He later admitted to using an online social networking site to solicit someone he thought was a white supremacist to kidnap the woman and child, claiming that the child’s father wanted custody. Patel did not know that the person he had contacted was an undercover FBI agent.

Patel wanted the man to gather a group of friends to kidnap the mother and daughter and return the child to her father. In an email, Patel allegedly advised the would-be kidnapper to handcuff the woman and knock her out if she refused to cooperate. The man was to be paid once Patel secured access to the woman’s bank account.

In addition to money, Patel promised that, as a bonus, the group would be allowed to keep the woman as a slave when the job was done, according to court documents.

Authorities said Patel hatched his plot via online chats held from a Verizon store in Monmouth Junction where he worked, and from a laptop computer used in a rented space in the Regus building at the Princeton Overlook Center.

Authorities did not say where the would-be victim and her child lived, but at the FBI’s request Hopewell Township detectives provided extra security at the woman’s place of employment.

No evidence George Zimmerman a racist

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

New documents released by the FBI on Thursday indicate that racism was not a factor in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in February.

George Zimmerman, the Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer who admitted shooting Martin, was branded a racist by theCongressional Black Caucus in April even though no evidence existed to back up the claim.

Civil rights activists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton – who doubles as a talk show host on MSNBC – used the shooting to whip up racial strife in the country.

But after interviewing dozens of friends, coworkers and neighbors, no evidence of racism was found, Reuters reported.

“The reports from the FBI were among a new collection of evidence, including crime scene photos, bank surveillance videos and other documents, that were released by Florida’s state attorney’s office in the racially charged case,” Reuters added.

Zimmerman – who says he shot Martin in self defense – has been charged with second degree murder in the shooting and currently lives in an undisclosed safe location following release on a $1 million bond.

According to Sanford Police Detective Christopher Serino, the lead investigator in the Martin case, the shooting was “not based on Martin’s skin color (but) rather based on his attire,” a report said.

Kevin Gray and Barbara Liston wrote:

Serino told investigators that members of local gangs, who called themselves “Goons,” frequently wore “hoodies,” or hooded sweatshirts, and he believed Zimmerman “took it upon himself to view Martin as acting suspicious.”

Serino, however, described Zimmerman as “overzealous” and having a “little hero complex,” Reuters said.

In May, we reported that Zimmerman could face federal hate crime charges in the shooting, and could face the death penalty if convicted of a hate crime connected with murder.

At the time, Bill Sheaffer, a legal analyst for WFTV, said that federal prosecutors “would have to prove the hate crime to charge Zimmerman,” the station reported. “What the government would have to prove is that Mr. Zimmerman acted out of hatred toward African-Americans.”

“The trial of George Zimmerman for the shooting of Trayvon Martin has yet to begin,” Mytheos Holt wrote at The Blaze. “The trial of George Zimmerman as a racist pig is, however, mercifully concluded.”

Maine’s crime rate jumps 5.4 percent

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

Maine‘s crime rate rose more than 5 percent in 2011, taking the second jump in as many years and the largest increase since 1975, in contrast to national trends.

Burglaries, assaults and thefts all increased from 2010 to last year in rural and urban areas of Maine.

Nationally, crime dropped, according to statistics released last week by the FBI. Violent crime dropped 4 percent in 2011 and property crimes dropped 0.08 percent.

Maine remains one of the safest states, but Public Safety Commissioner John Morris said the numbers are troubling. He identified drug addiction as the prime factor.

“Drugs are the main reason for the increase as addicts commit crimes to feed their habits,” Morris said. “Prescription drug abuse is responsible for much of the state’s drug problem.”

Demand for money to buy drugs fuels many of the state’s burglaries, thefts and robberies; and substance abuse, including abuse of alcohol, contributes to many of the assaults.

Every crime category increased in 2011 except robberies, which showed a slight decline.

Crime in Portland, the state’s largest city, dropped overall, continuing a positive trend.

Police chiefs in Greater Portland said drug-related crime can drive dramatic swings in crime rates.

“Anybody in law enforcement will tell you substance abuse issues drive crime statistics, both alcohol and drugs,” said Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck.

He said crime in Portland is around the same level so far this year.

“While cocaine is still the major drug problem in southern Maine, prescription drugs just really blew through the entire state and are causing major, major problems for entire counties of folks,” he said.

According to the state statistics, crime rose fastest in towns that have their own police departments, compared with rural areas that are patrolled by sheriff’s deputies and state troopers.

Falmouth Police Chief Ed Tolan, who leads a group of chiefs in southern Maine for the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, said it can be hard to determine exactly why crimes in one geographical area or type of community rise or fall in a given year.

He speculated that while urban centers can have a high percentage of criminals, many burglars, for instance, may have more success breaking into homes in the suburbs.

“If I’m going to commit a burglary to look for jewelry and such … South Portland, Cumberland, Falmouth, the nicer areas of Portland, that’s where you’re going to get your best bang for the buck,” Tolan said.

The Maine statistics show that arson increased 6 percent last year, burglaries increased 10 percent and motor vehicle thefts increased 5 percent.

There were 28 homicides during the year, up from 24 in 2010.

Aggravated assaults increased 16 percent, and sexual assaults increased 6 percent. Domestic-violence assaults increased nearly 5 percent in 2011, reversing three consecutive years of declines.

Crime increased 3.5 percent overall in rural areas, which are patrolled by state police and sheriff’s departments. It went up 6 percent in cities and towns with their own police departments.

The 36,248 crimes reported in 2011 represent a crime rate of 27.9 offenses per 1,000 people, Morris said. The national crime rate in 2010 was 33.5 offenses per 1,000 residents. The national rate for 2011 has not been released yet.

Most Arizona cities see rise in violent crime

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released its preliminary annual crime report, showing the number of crimes committed around Arizona have gone up in most of the cities evaluated.

Across the country, crimes fell four percent last year from 2010, making it the fifth straight year of declines.

The report states crime dropped by 4.7 percent on the West Coast showing a decrease in crime almost across the board, except for burglaries, which went up by 0.7 percent in 2011.

In Arizona, the data shows violent crimes went up in most of the ten cities evaluated in 2011. Chandler and Gilbert were the only two cities that saw a decline in violent crime cases.

The number of murders went up in Glendale and Mesa by 10 and three cases respectively, while the rest of the cities saw either declines or the same amount of cases as the previous year.

In 2011, reported rape cases were down in Gilbert by eight cases, down three cases in Peoria and down one case in Surprise.

The report also show burglaries were up in most of our state’s cities except Chandler and Tucson. Meantime, car thefts were down in most cities except in Glendale and Surprise.

Every year, the FBI gathers crime data from 14,009 law enforcement agencies across the country to compile the report. If you would like to take a closer look at the numbers, you can check out the FBI’s website.

‘Obama-hating’ supremacist charged with illegal possession of AK-47

Friday, June 1st, 2012

Douglas Howard Story, 48, expressed hatred and support for the violence towards a number of political figures, and may face up to 10 years in jail if convicted.

According to Sky News, the FBI took notice of Story after he posted on an ‘Aryan Nation‘ website that he was preparing to buy an AK-47 and have it modified to become fully automatic.

He is alleged to have made numerous statements on various white supremacy online forums using the screen name ‘Confederate Brother’ in which he continually rants about his hatred of minorities.

He also expressed a desire to see President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder being removed from office with a ’30.06′, the most common type of rifle cartridge used by the US military for decades.

“We got to get the boy out of the White House any means possible – election, assassination, it doesn’t matter which. If he does end up being re-elected for another, actually being installed for another four years, I’m quite confident that someone will assassinate him,” Story said.

Members of FBI’s Washington Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force then arrested him after allegedly receiving the modified weapon from an undercover agent.

Authorities in the US have reported a dramatic rise in the number of anti-government militia groups since Obama took office. The Southern Poverty Law Centre (SPLC) says they have increased from 150 to more than 1,200 in number in the last three years.

Report details mass shooting in Ariz.

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

ll four people killed by a former neo-Nazi before he turned the gun on himself this month in a quiet Phoenix suburb were shot in the head, according to a police report released Tuesday that paints the clearest picture yet of the gruesome crime scene.

Various Gilbert police officers and detectives wrote about what they saw at the home where they believe Jason ToddJT” Ready, 39, shot and killed his girlfriend and three others, including a toddler, before killing himself May 2 in a domestic dispute.

Ready was the leader of the U.S. Border Guard, a group of armed civilians that patrols Arizona‘s desert for illegal immigrants and drug smugglers.

When authorities first arrived at the home, they saw the bodies of Ready, wearing only tan shorts and boots, and another man. Both were dead with pools of blood beneath their heads. A camouflaged gun was near Ready.

When police walked to the home’s open front door, they saw the bodies of Ready’s girlfriend, Lisa Mederos, her daughter and her granddaughter, a 15-month-old named Lilly.

Mederos had been shot twice, once in the face and once in the back of the head, the report said. Police believe she was first shot while on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, and that the bullet also severed one of her fingers.

Mederos and her daughter Amber Mederos were clearly dead. But when officers checked the toddler, they found signs of life, the report said.

The girl, who was wearing gold earrings and a denim jumper, had been shot once in the area near her left temple and cheek.

“I could see brain tissue and a pooling of blood next to her head,” wrote Officer Veronica Roden. “Her arms and neck were still warm to the touch, and we both detected a pulse on the inner part of her upper left arm.”

Gilbert firefighters strapped the girl to a backboard and rushed her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

When officers went farther into the home, they heard a woman crying in a locked bedroom and kicked in the door. They found Lisa Mederos’ 19-year-old daughter, Brittany Mederos. Because police had to clear the home, they forced Brittany Mederos to walk by the bodies of her mother and sister, and her dying niece.

“Upon entering the hallway, the female observed the bodies on the floor at which time she began crying hysterically,” wrote Officer Chris Zamora. “I advised the female to ‘Just keep walking’ as I continued to escort her, stepping over the body of at least one of the female victims and around the other two victims.”

Another officer described having to tell Lilly’s father, Jess Boggs, that the toddler was dead. He arrived after the police tape had been put up around the home and surrounding houses.

“Jess showed me a picture of Lilly on his cellphone,” wrote Officer Michael Cluff. “I immediately recognized the child as the same child I had observed within the house. Jess seemed to recognize my reaction to seeing the picture, and he began to wail and cry.”

The other victim was Amber Mederos’ boyfriend, Jim Hiott. Ready lived at the home with Lisa Mederos and Brittany Mederos.

One of Amber Mederos’ friends, Cassandra Olivier, told police she thought Ready was angry because Amber Mederos, Hiott and their daughter wanted to move back into Lisa Mederos’ home. Olivier said Ready was the one to make them move out in the first place when he moved into the house six months before the shooting.

The FBI already was conducting a domestic terrorism investigation of Ready at the time of the shootings. The probe dated to when Ready was a member of the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement and continued into his participation with the border group, The Arizona Republic reported.

Search warrant affidavits obtained by the Republic show federal agents seized numerous computers and munitions from Ready’s home. The warrants imply weapons seized at the murder scene were stolen from the U.S. military. Focus on those weapons could trigger a larger federal investigation.

Documents connected to the search warrant show FBI agents seized two computer towers and two laptops, correspondence, cellphones, police and Nazi uniforms, white-supremacist propaganda and bank statements.

Agents also seized two assault-style rifles and multiple rounds of ammunition. The reporting FBI agent focused on “approximately two dozen military ordnance/40 millimeter grenades” loaded with explosives, tear gas, buckshot and smoke.

Recordings of two 911 calls released about a week after the killings revealed the horror just before and after the crime.

The first came from Lisa Mederos, who told the operator in a raised voice: “Oh my God. He’s got a gun. No!” before the sounds of two shots.

In another call, a sobbing Brittany Mederos told a dispatcher: “My mom and my niece and my sister are all on the floor. They’re hurt pretty bad.”

She said that just before the shooting, she heard Ready and her mother “fighting and screaming” so she hid under her bed. “I come out and they’re all on the floor and there’s blood,” Brittany Mederos said.

ARREST BLACK SUPREMACISTS OR FREE THE WHITE ONES

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Last week, a group of 10 white supremacists were arrested in an FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force operation in Orlando, Fla., for allegedly planning for an “inevitable race war.” The supremacist group is accused of being armed “to the teeth” and conducting drills in preparation for a race war against blacks and Jews. They were allegedly targeting Orlando City Hall and other locations. They allegedly had also discussed making ricin, a deadly poison.

I say these people should be released and left alone until this same governmental task force or another with similar powers arrests members of the New Black Panther Party (NBPP), along with Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton. The NBPP called for 5,000 volunteers in Sanford, Fla., to help hunt down George Zimmerman, who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, a black teenager, in self-defense. They also made ominous overtures toward the Sanford Police and prosecutor Angela Corey, saying, “If the government won’t do the job, we’ll do it.”

These threats should be taken seriously. There has been a spate of random police shootings in the last year; an unambiguous threat such as they made should have been taken seriously. They circulated a “Wanted Dead or Alive” poster of George Zimmerman, at a press conference. They placed a $10,000 bounty on the head of Mr. Zimmerman, which they raised to a million-dollar bounty. The monies for the bounty were solicited across state lines – they called on black professional athletes, actors and personalities to contribute to it.

The NBPP has openly called for the killing of “white babies.” Michelle Williams, NBPP chief of staff in Tampa, told blacks on a conference call: “I just want to say to all the listeners on this phone call, that if you are having any doubt about getting suited, booted and armed up for this race war that we’re in that has never ended, let me tell you somethin’ … the thing that’s about to happen [to] these honkies, these crackers, these pigs, these people, these motherf—ers … it has been long overdue. … I’m kinda pi–ed off right now that the state of Florida ain’t on fire. This could not have happened in L.A. because them brothers up there are not scared to riot. This could not have happened in St. Petersburg, Florida, where the black man over there ain’t scared to kill a cracker.” (Courtesy of Breitbart.com; posted by Erica Ritz, April 8.

During the same conference call, Chawn Kweli, a NBPP national spokesman, said: “And there are those who wish they could stand in this hour, to see the destruction of the devil’s world and the devil’s society – and [I] ain’t talking about no dude underneath the ground with a pitchfork and pantyhose. I’m talking about that blond-haired, blue-eyed, sometimes brown-eyed, Caucasian walkin’ around with a mindset, a demonistic mindset, and a nature to do evil and brutality.”

AL Sharpton and Jesse Jackson fomented anger and stoked the flames of violence during their rallies in Sanford. As Breitbart.com reported, the NBPP called for a race war and to “kill a cracker for Trayvon.”

Hashim Nzinga, the NBPP leader who called for the vigilante capture of Mr. Zimmerman, was literally only hours later arrested for illegally being in possession of a firearm as a convicted felon – when he sold a high-end firearm to Stone Mountain Pawn Shop, in DeKalb County, Ga.

The NBPP has long called for killing whites, and yet the Obama White House and Justice Department either do not take these threats seriously or are not interested in protecting white people. Since Martin was killed, there have been many instances of blacks committing violent acts against whites and then making reference to the acts being “for Trayvon.”

And yet the Obama administration has an FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force arrest a white supremacist group. I haven’t heard about a white person killing, car-jacking, or attacking a black person and then saying that it is “for George Zimmerman.”

This is the climate in which Fox News Channel is providing safe harbor for the avowed racist Jehmu Greene. Fox News has refused to return my phone calls or respond to emails by outraged, soon-to-be former viewers. Fox News has an obligation to show that they will not contribute to the teeming caldron of black racism.

We should not make room in America for racism and/or those who are working to incite racial discord. Nor should we be tolerant of a Jehmu Greene who has a long history of association with Marxist anarchist groups like ACORN – who not only harbor racist feelings but brazenly spew racist epithets in national public venues.

Fox has an obligation, at the very least, to suspend Greene without pay or never again make mention of a crime committed by a white person against a black. Just as the Obama administration must either release and apologize to the white supremacists arrested in Orlando or have the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force arrest the leadership of the NBPP, along with Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson.

Affidavit: Suspected supremacist planned to torch Mexican consulate in St. Paul

Friday, May 18th, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota man with suspected ties to white supremacist groups planned to attack the Mexican consulate in St. Paul, believing it would stir debate on immigration amnesty issues ahead of the 2012 presidential election, according to a federal affidavit obtained Thursday by The Associated Press.

Joseph Benjamin Thomas also told an undercover FBI agent he considered himself a “domestic terrorist” instead of an American and would risk his life for the white supremacist movement in the event of a “race war,” the FBI affidavit said.

The document, recently unsealed in federal court, provides new details about the investigation into Thomas’ alleged plan. He was indicted in April on drug charges, though authorities had been watching him and another man since 2010 as part of a domestic terrorism probe. The affidavit said he’d amassed weapons and wanted to attack minorities, people with left-leaning political beliefs and government officials.

Thomas, 42, is not facing any terrorism-related charges. His attorney did not return a phone message Thursday, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to comment.

“We consider him a threat, and we believe he had the capacity to carry these threats out,” FBI spokesman Kyle Loven said in an interview Thursday. “This was a lengthy investigation, and it was driven by our belief that the intentions of these persons were sincere.”

In addition to the plot against the consulate, the FBI alleges, Thomas had collected license plate numbers of people with Barack Obama bumper stickers and had asked an associate to volunteer at a left-leaning bookstore to obtain customers’ addresses.

The affidavit alleges that Thomas and another man arrested in April, 31-year-old Samuel James Johnson, were trying to form a supremacist group with a militant wing. Thomas told an undercover agent he expected a race war within two years and that his group would be able to control an interstate and airports to prevent the military from coming into Minnesota, the affidavit said.

In the plot against the consulate, Thomas allegedly told an undercover agent he wanted to steal a pickup truck, load it with barrels of oil and gas, drive it into the consulate and allow the mixture to spill, then set it ablaze with a road flare. Thomas also said he’d found recipes for the mixture and instructions for making napalm, the affidavit said.

The affidavit alleged Thomas wanted to carry out the attack on May 1, a day used in recent years by activists in the U.S. to hold rallies for immigrant rights. But he later said the attack couldn’t happen that day, blaming personal reasons and noting more police were in the area, the affidavit said.

FBI agents reported seeing Thomas conducting surveillance on the consulate building in December. At that point, he told an undercover agent he wasn’t sure if the plot should move forward but continued to develop it and found a place where 55-gallon barrels could be stolen.

Thomas also suggested placing hoax explosive devices along the May Day parade route in the Twin Cities, saying he had video of prior parades so he could identify parade participants.

Ana Luisa Fajer, the consul of Mexico based in St. Paul, said the consulate was “duly and timely” notified of Thomas’ alleged plot.

“We take these threats very seriously and appreciate the full support we have received from the outset,” she said in a phone interview, adding that the consulate’s security protocols have been reinforced.

“Expressions of hate are the ones that motivated the alleged plotter,” she said. “These things exist, but we definitely think it’s an isolated voice here.”

Thomas, from the St. Paul suburb of Mendota Heights, was indicted on four charges related to possession and sale of methamphetamine, while Johnson, of Austin, Minn., was indicted on weapons charges. The indictment said Johnson’s prior convictions barred him from having weapons, though he was found with five — including a semi-automatic assault rifle — and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

Mark Pitcavage, director of investigative research for the Anti-Defamation League, which tracks extremist groups nationwide, said weapons charges are common in such cases because it’s hard for prosecutors to prove terror charges based on someone’s planning.

“In my 18 years of having tracked extremists, I think that weapons charges are among the most sure to stick,” he said. “Weapons charges are pretty common among most major right wing extremist movements because they love guns.”

According to an affidavit unsealed last month, Johnson was a former member and Minnesota leader of the National Socialist Movement, a white nationalist group, and he and Thomas were trying to form a spinoff group called the Aryan Liberation Movement with the intent of committing violence.

U.S. Hate And Extremist Groups Hit Record Levels, New Report Says

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

The number of domestic hate and extremist groups in the United States grew to record levels in 2011, led by a surge in anti-government radicalism, according to a report released today by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a prominent civil rights organization based in Montgomery, AL. In 2011 there were 1,018 “hate groups” nationally, representing a slight increase from the previous record, one year earlier in 2010, when there were 1,002 hate groups tallied.

The 2011 figures are the eleventh consecutive annual increase and the highest number since the SPLC began enumerating hate group totals in the 1980s. In 2000 there were just 602 of these groups nationally. While 2011 hate crime numbers are not yet tabulated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the agency counted 6,624 hate crimes in 2010 in the United States, an increase of only 26 from a 14 year low recorded the previous year. A 2010 analysis by the Institute for Homeland Security Solutions found that from 1999-2009 white supremacist and anti-government domestic extremist plots were only surpassed by those undertaken by radical Salafist and al-Qaeda followers during the decade.

2012-03-08-hate_graph.jpg
Photo: Southern Poverty Law Center

California, the nation’s most populous state, led the nation with 84 hate groups last year according to the SPLC, followed by Georgia with 65, Florida with 55 and New Jersey with 47. The report broke down the number of hate groups in the United States by type and number for 2011:

  • Ku Klux Klan 152
  • Neo Nazi 170
  • White Nationalist 146
  • Racist Skinheads 133
  • Christian Identity 55
  • Neo-Confederate 32
  • Black Separatists 140
  • General Hate 190

While anti-gay and anti-Muslim groups experienced increases, the number of Ku Klux Klan groups actually declined significantly from 221 in 2010 to 152 in 2011. A handful of domestic Muslim hate groups, like the As-Sabiqun movement were not tallied, although the SPLC did an extensive analysis on these types of extremists late last year. The SPLC also saw a significant decline in extremist nativist groups that engage in confrontational activities beyond mere political organizing, such as harassing undocumented residents or undertaking border patrols.

Sovereign Citizens and Patriots

Perhaps more disturbing than the small, yet sustained rise in hate groups, is the parabolic growth over the last few years in the number of anti-government “Patriot” and militia groups reported by the SPLC. These groups, which are categorized separately from hate groups, grew 55% to 1,274 in 2011, up from 824 in 2010. In 2008 such groups totaled only 149, while in 2009 the total increased to 512. Michigan had the largest number of “Patriot” groups with 79, followed by Texas with 76, California with 59 and Washington State, with 50.

The SPLC and other analysts attribute these increases to widespread distress with the role of government as well as anger and conspiratorial rhetoric directed toward President Obama. Last year’s anti-government totals eclipsed the previous record of 858 groups in 1996: the year following the truck bombing of Oklahoma City’s Alfred P. Murrah federal building that left 168 dead. Despite the violent rhetoric and increasing number of extremist groups, there has been a paucity of successful violent attacks by both hard-core hatemongers and right-wing militants in the United States over the last decade. While hate groups and right-wing extremists, with some notable exceptions, have largely been unsuccessful in carrying out violence, analysts are increasingly concerned due to:

  1. A steady stream of thwarted violent plots,
  2. Several notable spontaneous violent encounters with police,
  3. The rapid increase in groups,
  4. Widespread political, economic and social distress

In addition to the Southern Poverty Law Center, government agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI are increasingly concerned about the threat posed by a subset of anti-government radicals called “sovereign citizens.” According to Daryl Johnson, the author of a forthcoming book on extremism and a former DHS senior analyst, “The sovereign citizens belong to an extreme antigovernment movement that believes the government is illegitimate and has no authority over them.” In addition to their violent leanings he explains that: “The sovereign citizen movement has actively exploited the mortgage foreclosure crisis and promoted debt-elimination schemes and scams to financially desperate individuals.”

This subgroup is estimated to have between 100,000 and 300,000 adherents nationally. While many are well-armed and some have undertaken criminality, the overwhelming majority are nonetheless nonviolent. Just last month the FBI held a press conference in Washington, DC on the threat posed by sovereign citizens. Deputy Assistant Director of Counterterrorism Stuart McArthur explained, “We are focusing our efforts [on anti-government extremists] because of the threat of violence.” In a September 2010 report the FBI noted that six law enforcement officers were killed by lone wolf sovereign citizens since 2000. The report warned that:

The sovereign-citizen threat likely will grow as the nationwide movement is fueled by the Internet, the economic downturn, and seminars held across the country that spread their ideology and show people how they can tap into funds and eliminate debt through fraudulent methods. As sovereign citizens’ numbers grow, so do the chances of contact with law enforcement and, thus, the risks that incidents will end in violence.

In August 2011 at a major national conference convened by the National Counterterrorism Center and the Department of Homeland Security, California State University San Bernardino’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, also warned of the threat of sovereign citizens, particularly lone wolves and armed autonomous cells operating just outside the orbit of more established vocal, but nonviolent organizations. The Cal State Center noted an increase in disturbing activity and cited over one dozen illegal incidents or prosecutions in just the previous quarter. Most of these incidents involved spontaneous violent confrontations with law enforcement, threats, or financial and tax scams. The FBI states that over the last two years there have been 18 prosecutions annually, primarily related to money scams, up from 10 in 2010.

SPLC’s Senior Fellow Mark Potok explained some of the dynamics behind contemporary extremism in today’s report:

In Europe and the U.S. both, white dominated countries have become less so. At the same time, globalization has caused major economic dislocations in the West as certain industries and kinds of production move to less developed countries.
